Stitch Away the Anxiety
In the last couple of years, there has been a rise in popularity in adult colouring books, knitting and cross-stitching. It's believed that one of the reasons is because of the mental health benefits associated with these activities. I myself have struggled for years with depression and anxiety, and I know for a fact that cross-stitching helps me cope.
Mental health issues can affect anyone, at any point in their lives, and doing a simple craft like cross-stitch can be extremely effective at finding focus. A finished project makes anyone feel a great sense of accomplishment too!
Let's face it, most of us are either spending all day behind a computer screen, stressed at work, or at home with (while loveable) crazy kids. Doing something creative gives a welcome break from all of that.
Since cross stitching is very repetitive, at times it can feel like a form of meditation - giving a sense of inner calm. Which in turn, helps in feeling refocused.
When cross stitching, you also have complete and total control over your actions and project. This can really help when things are happening in life that may be out of your control.
Last but certainly not least, I think one of the best things about cross stitch is the community that comes along with it. Getting together with a stitching buddy who shares a love for cross stitch is a major plus for mental well-being. With so many Facebook groups out there that are dedicated to cross-stitching, you can meet like-minded friends in just a click.
Do you cross stitch for better mental health? I would love to hear about it! Let me know and leave a comment!
